Description
Series Big Idea: Whether it’s parent-child, spouse-spouse, child-parent, friend-friend, employer-employee, we can all agree that relationships are often tough. I think we can also agree that words, for better or worse, can shape and define the relationship. This series digs into the book of Proverbs, mining its wisdom for words that have the power to revolutionize our relationships. These four phrases can bring new life to any relationship.
Session 1: “No”
Big Idea: Learning to say NO to the appropriate people & things at the appropriate time will revolutionize your relationships because you’ll begin to live your life day-by-day in sync with your values. Our values in life are shaped by what we say YES and NO to; while many of us have a set of values on paper, we actually live out another set of values day-to-day. The Big Idea for this series is developing the discipline to sync our values with our day-to-day living. In order to do so, we’ve got to develop the discipline to say NO a lot more than we often do.
Scripture: Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. (Proverbs 25:28)
Session 2: “I Understand”
Big Idea: Saying “I Understand” will revolutionize your relationships because it will reveal you’ve actually been listening to others! With men wanting to be respected, women wanting to feel love, listening to the other when talking SAYS “I respect you,” and “I love you.”
Scripture: A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions. (8:2)
Session 3: “I Love You”
Big Idea: Regularly saying I LOVE YOU will revolutionize your relationships because it will wipe away fear, insecurity and doubt in others; It will build confidence and community; it will strengthen not only your relationship, but the relationships of everyone influenced by your relationship with that person (mom/dad/kids/etc.)
Scripture: Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Proverbs 3:3
Session 4: “Thank You”
Big Idea: THANK YOU revolutionizes our relationships because while many in the world are shouting LOOK AT ME, a heart full of gratitude says THANK YOU. While the world wants more, a heart filled with gratitude knows it has more than enough. While the world continually expects more and more from others, taking them for granted, a heart full of gratitude says Thank You.
Scripture: A cheerful disposition is good for your health; gloom and doom leave you bone-tired. Proverbs 17:22
